One of the best studies on human sexuality by a Christian theologian. I've read literally dozens of books on this subject and have found no Christian thinker more pro sexuality than Sherrard. Other loves --Agape (charity), Phileo (brotherly) or Storge (affection) - too often get the nod (C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves) in history as to what actually is the essence of Christian love. Eros, sexual love, has for so long gotten a bad rap. Sherrard not only explains why but points to a better and more accurate way. For such a short book, it is detailed and strong in explaining why Christianity has been wrongly understood as so anti sex through the ages.Be prepared for a history lesson if you are a Western Christian, as he is Eastern Orthodox. Roman Catholics and Protestant Evangelicals alike will get a jolt of overdue rethinking and church history from Sherrard on sex. It is a wonderful book and a wonderful occasion that it is back in print.Sherrard's work is well known in Eastern Christian circles (Greek, Antiochian, Russian, Romanian, Serbian Orthodox) as he was a key co-translator into English of Volume One of the Philokalia along with Bishop Kallistos Ware and G.E.H. Palmer. The Philokalia is a serious work for ascetics on how to profit spiritually from living in a monastery (see orthodoxwiki.org, Philokalia). Not exactly what you'd expect from a theology sex expert.Bishop Kallistos Ware writes wonderful things about this Eros and Christianity in his forward to Sherrard's last work published after his death--Christianity: Lineaments of a Sacred Tradition by Philip Sherrard, saying it was sadly out of print for too long. Now back. He told me last week in San Francisco: "Yes, he has some very interesting thing to say about that" (sexual love) in that work. Note also that Sherrard was married twice (his first wife died) and his daughter was at his bedside when he passed. I got that he knew the big picture on sex, love and marriage, union, communion, family. All of it.This 1976 work on sexual, romantic and erotic love was unavailable for almost twenty years I believe. My copy is well worn. I've told friends I would have dropped everything to go to France and study with this man. While he was alive he was a serious theologian yet had his feet on the ground, with a wife and and family. You got the sense he knew what he was talking about when discussing romantic, physical love. Not true with 95% of the ancients on the matter of Church and sex as they were unmarried. He was married twice, first to Anna Mirodia after he moved to Greece in 1946. He married again in 1979 to his second wife, the publisher of this work, Denise Harvey.A must book to own, whether you are a seminary professor, a monastic, a mom with a teenage daughter, a match.com dating man or 50ish woman looking for a mid-life husband on eHarmony. Sherrard delivers post sexual revolution smarts yet timeless practical wisdom and insight accompanied by a deep yet easy to understand theology which is rooted in the author's love as a layman for an unknowable yet somehow knowable God.
I painstakingly photocopied this out of print 1976 book page by page not many years ago, having found it in several bibliographies and, then, online. For so long it was out of print, copies available only on Ebay for $150 or so. Now it is gloriously back in print. As a mid-life single person looking beginning to date again, had Sherrard been alive and still teaching in England and Greece during my journey, I might have pulled up stakes and moved to become his student.This man was a translator of Greek poets, a philosopher and theologian, a man who believed cosmology mattered. He was an Eastern Orthodox convert and layman, married twice. He could write about the theology of sexual love as one who had been there. Far easier to understand perhaps than Christos Yannaras (Variations on the Song of Songs) or even Lossky (Mystical Theology of the Eastern Church) or Paul Evdokimov (The Sacrament of Love), Sherrard shared their place as a layman in the romantic and sexual love trenches of the church, knew about connecting with women in all matters physical, practical and poetical--including family and kids.In the four essays here he addresses: The sexual relationship in Christian thought. 2) The body, beauty, and sexuality. 3) Towards a theology of sexual love. 4) An approach to the sacrament of marriage. He takes on especially well the often confused notion that Christianity is an anti-sex faith. He unravels the oft mistaken notion that Eros, erotic love, is a broken or debased or lesser form of the higher Agape, or charitable love.If you are accustomed to the sensuality of Eastern Orthodox Christian worship, his writings here will not surprise you...or how pro body and pro senses the man is in his theological arguments: "whatever may be the final consummation between the union of man and woman, crucial in their relationship is the sexual element."Sherrard is almost tantra like in the way he lifts unity and connecting and healing into this religious business of what physical and sacramental love is all about.Small as it is at 93 pages, this is more than a little gift book for newlyweds. It should be required reading for every pastor and priest and theologian who play a part in putting couples together for life in the nuptial rites. I think it should be a must for date night reading for couples who don't want to just live together (note: you excommunicate yourself in the Eastern church if you do) but want to be perhaps married yet more than married; two who want their excitement for each other to remain close to the fire...as in, "I would that you were hot or cold" as our Lord said.Sherrard (1922-1995) was the Assistant Director of the British School at Athens and Lecturer in the History of the Orthodox Church at London University. He authored many books and articles on Orthodox, Byzantine and Greek themes including books and translations of Greek poetry old and new. More than one contemporary Greek poet received a Pulitzer due to his translation work. The pinnacle of his translations of course, remains the complete works of the Philokalia which he did alongside Ware and Palmer.Sherrard was an ecology man, too. Green before green was fashionable, he wrote often about the healing of the earth. No surprise he understood the importance and spirituality of sexual, physical love. He was a family man, too. His wife and daughter were at his side when he died in London at the age of 72.This book perhaps is first and foremost for those serious about courtship, or being "in love" or engaged or married; those who still believe in the power of erotic connecting, who see sex as a "god thing"; who believe in God and marriage and church and Jesus and sex and union and salvation and divine sensuality. Sacred sex indeed, as in his other work The Sacred In Art And Life.For thinking people who want philosophy and theology mixed with their technique in the bedroom or under the stars, this is it.
