Review

Praise for Portraits of a PastorIt is comforting and encouraging to find a book that takes pastoring seriously, that rightly prioritizes the character of the pastor, and that grounds the practice of pastoring in the words of Scripture. This is a wonderful book from Jason Allen, and his talented team of contributors, that will help equip the young pastor and encourage the established pastor.Micah FriesPastor of Brainerd Baptist ChurchTalk about a book that’s hard to put down; what pastor doesn’t want to be fully equipped? This book challenges, informs, and inspires. Johnny HuntPastor of Woodstock Baptist ChurchAs believers work together to push back lostness in North America and around the world, no one—outside of Jesus—will play a more important role than pastors. That’s why this book is so critically important. It’s like sitting down with nine pastoral mentors who will talk frankly and passionately with you about your most important pastoral roles as a husband, father, preacher, evangelist, leader, and more. There is no limit to what could happen if pastors lead the way in fulfilling the Great Commission. Kevin EzellPresident of the North American Mission Board, SBCIn Portraits of a Pastor,we get a vision and pathway to more faithful and fruitful pastoral ministry. I’m thankful for and challenged by the content!  Ed Stetzer Billy Graham Distinguished Chair, Wheaton CollegePastors have multiple roles. Each is demanding, indeed impossible apart from the help of the Lord and the encouragement of the flock. Apart from Jesus, a pastor can do nothing (cf. John 15:5). Since 1983,I have served as senior pastor at four different SBC churches—each diverse in size. I understand something of the demands, responsibilities, problems, and blessings of the pastorate. Pastors need encouragement and sound, biblical advice to help them lead their churches. That is why I recommend this new work, Portraits of a Pastor. It will help every Christian understand more clearly the responsibilities of a pastor, and why his role is so vital to the fulfillment of the Great Commission.Steve GainesSenior Pastor, Bellevue Baptist Church, MemphisPresident of the Southern Baptist ConventionThe New Testament uses three rich words to designate the pastoral office and another twenty (at least) to define and describe pastoral duties. As a pastor and a professor, I often lament that books on pastoring fail to stand at the intersection of the academic and the practical and provide a full-orbed picture of the pastorate. Better than any book I have ever read, Portraits of a Pastor captures both the simplicity of the pastoral call and the complexity of the pastoral life. Until now, I’ve never seen a book daring and honest enough to render the mixture of head and heart, of cerebral and visceral, of a life occupied with the study of the Word and an obsession with reaching the lost, that serving as one of God’s shepherds requires. Jason Allen and his colleagues instruct, but more importantly, they inspire. Reading this book made me grateful that I am a pastor, but it gave me the tools—and the way—to be a better one to the glory of God.Hershael W. YorkPastor of Buck Run Baptist Church in Frankfort, KY; Victor and Louise Lester Professor of Christian Preaching at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KYThe world at its worst needs the church at its best. Faithful churches require faithful pastors. Unfortunately, there are many who are confused about what the pastor is to be and do. Portraits of a Pastor paints a clear picture of the biblical role of the Christian pastor. Read this book! H. B. Charles Jr.Pastor of Shiloh Metropolitan Tabernacle, Jacksonville, FLThis wise group of pastoral theologians has teamed up to provide church leaders with a valuable resource for local church ministry. Portraits of a Pastor will refresh weary ministry leaders and guide aspiring leaders. This is not corporate business principles baptized, but biblically rooted, Christ-exalting teaching. I was edified by it, and I pray that it will strengthen and build up Christ's church around the globe.Tony MeridaPastor, Imago Dei Church, Raleigh, NC

While the Word of God never changes, and thus our interpretation of it never changes, it seems that few books being published these days about the timeless Word of God could themselves be described as timeless. Portraits of a Pastor (edited by Jason K. Allen) appears to be a timeless book. Certainly, only time will tell, but the immediate value of this book is real, and it’s straightforward revelation of truth applied to a pastoral context. That makes this a valuable resource and a needed resource. What is a pastor and what are his responsibilities? Despite biblical clarity, the answer to that question often eludes many people. Therefore, Portraits of a Pastor seeks to open up the Scripture and answer those very questions. To do this, nine men united to examine the various roles that a pastor must fulfill. Each author has been chosen to write about the area that he specializes in, making this a book of the experts. Utilizing a chapter each, the authors dig deep into God’s word to give the following portraits of a pastor: Pastor as shepherd Pastor as husband and father Pastor as preacher Pastor as theologian Pastor as church historian Pastor as evangelist Pastor as missionary Pastor as leader Pastor as man of GodExamining individual portraits, together these give an overview of just what is expected of a pastor. While most of the roles a pastor fills are not surprising, there are a couple of surprises on this list (i.e. church historian, missionary). Yet, even some of the expected roles are frequently overlooked (i.e. theologian, shepherd). Therefore, one can appreciate the conviction that each author writes with and the emphasis towards Godliness that is conveyed.Bogged down by worldly expectations of a pastor, rarely is the first view towards the godly expectations of a pastor. The authors have done well at utilizing a short amount of space (193 pages) by highlighting the major points within each role. Frustrated with many of the books that Moody Publishers so willingly publish, it is nice to see them publish a book of this caliber that maintains a deep conviction of truth. This is a must-have read for every pastor.Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publisher at no cost to me for the purposes of review. However, this review is not influenced by the author, editor, publisher, or anyone associated with the book and is the response of my own reading of the book.

Amazing book, outlining the role of the Pastor.

Very Good

Being a pastor is a burdensome job. Too often a pastor has to wear many hats and he ends up spread too thin, whether these duties are demanded by the congregation or are self-imposed. Either way, the result is often burnout: physical, emotional, and spiritual. Add to this the secularized culture that we live in, the lack of confidence in the church and the Word, and the demotion of the importance of the pastorate, and you can begin to see the struggles that they face on a daily basis. This short, powerful book discusses nine different roles and expectations a pastor experiences: preacher, leader, missionary, evangelist, man of God, theologian, church historian, shepherd, father, and husband. Each topic is authored by a different evangelist so that you get many different perspectives. The chapters are both biblical and practical, designed to help the pastor to more faithfully, and more effectively, serve the local church with clarity and purpose. This book highlights the joys and struggles of being a pastor, as well as the great honor that comes with preaching and teaching God's Word. Expository preaching is expanded upon in simple yet powerful terms. Thinking and leading missiologically is emphasized. Each topic presented in this book is thoroughly discussed. There may be a tendency to select and read only the topics you feel you might need a refresher on, but I urge you to read this book in its entirety. You will feel a deeper conviction and passion to be the pastor that God has called you to be.I am not a pastor. I have been a deacon in my church for the past three years. I will take many points from this book and apply them to my own spiritual life, and I will also be more prepared to facilitate my pastor and church with any needs they may have. I recommend this book to all Christians, especially pastors and leaders within the church. I received this as a free ARC from Moody Publishers on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

If you ask the average person on the street what is a pastor, you will get many different answers. Some of those answers might include one who is an entertaining speaker. Another answer might be the one in charge of the church. If you ask a Christian what a pastor is suppose to do, you will also get many different answers. Some of them might include preaching as long as its not boring. Others would be one who is reaching out to people while the rest of the church works and plays. There are many unhealthy expectations of a pastor these days. A majority of them are not even biblical. Jason K Allen, president of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, has put a book together with a few contributors on what a pastor is and what he is suppose to do. The book is titled, Portraits of a Pastor. In this book, we see the pastor as a shepherd, man of God, preacher, family man, missionary, evangelist, leader, theologian, and church historian. Each one of these qualities are addressed by authors who have been the pastoral ministry. The contributors to the book are Danny Akin, Jason G Duesing, Ronnie Floyd, Christian T George, Owen Strachan, Donald Whitney, John Mark Yeats, and Jared C Wilson. Each one of these authors goes through the qualities of the pastor as well as his biblical role in the church. There might be some of you who don't agree with what has been written in this book, but I did find it very helpful in hopes of one day I will become a pastor and/or elder. I highly recommend this book for those entering the pastoral ministry or those who are wondering if this is what the Lord is leading them to do. I also think it is wise to have a pastor share this book with his fellow elders.
