This is a marvelous book: based on extensive documentation, it offers deep insight and wonderful wisdom about spirituality and the human soul.
It is a very good book.
"Many Voices" puts forward an in-depth understanding of and appreciation for the "multiplicity" of lived human experience. The application of pastoral theology and relational psychology to the human person offers an invaluable framework for the educator and practioner engaged in the field of pastoral psychology.
Many Voices offers a feast of careful, creative scholarly work of a multidisciplinary nature combined with the wisdom and insight of a seasoned pastoral psychotherapist. Its basic thesis, about the multiplicity and complexity of human beings and the fundamentally social-relational character of personhood, introduces and develops the implications of contemporary relational psychoanalysis, and is of great importance both theoretically and practically. The book has the additional distinction of engaging and integrating theology in a significant way. It is really an outstanding achievement that should be essential reading for any pastoral counselor, psychotherapist, or pastoral theologian. Secular therapists in the psychoanalytic tradition would undoubtedly also find it a rich and stimulating source of insight.
This review has nothing to do with the author herself. Pamela Cooper-White is indeed a good writer. I like her books. The major problem with this book is found in its kindle format:1. the content page is in disarray. It is very hard for me to locate the chapter I want to read, let alone seeing the organization of the book.2. the notes are not linked up to the note-pages [I know there is one-click setup that can lead you to the note-page instantly, and by pressing "back" button, you may go back to the page you were reading right away.] so that when you sweat to find the note-page, you already forgot where you were reading. This same problem appears in this author's another book "Shared Wisdowm." I ended up buying a hard copy of Shared Wisdom as well. It is sadly a repetitive mistake! I hope amazon kindle will enhance its QC next time.
Many Voices is an accomplishment because it considers many perspectives--with a focus on the psychological and theological--on what it means to be human. Rich reading about a rich subject--humanity.
