My mother had the original First French Edition of this book which was published in 1973. As a teenager it could usually be found in my room. I was already a big Dalí Fan then. I was delighted when Taschen reissued this book, this time translated into English. This lavishly illustrated cookbook presents all 136 recipes of the original in 12 chapters, specially illustrated by Dalí. The sections include: exotic dishes, eggs - seafood, first course, meats, snails - frogs, fish - shellfish, game - poultry, pork, vegetables, aphrodisiacs, sweets - deserts and hors d'oeuvres. The recipes are from top Paris Restaurants such as Lasserre, La Tour d’Argent, Maxim’s, and Le Train Bleu. Dali and Gala were known as extravagant connoisseurs. As far as I can tell these are all real recipes. The only one I ever tried was No.54 "Snails á la Chablisienne". The recipe calls for 100 snails, I reduced this to 12. Many of the other recipes are not really doable because of complexity, difficulty in finding the ingredients and probably also the difficulty in finding willing dinner guests to eat "Frog Cream", "Pig Feet in flaky pie crusts" and "Salsifies with quenelles".Illustrations consist of photographs of the dishes and table settings which are mostly ok and paintings and drawings by Dalí. Some I've seen before others not. There are also some photographs of menus. The book was printed in Italy and is very well illustrated. The reproductions are good, but the quality is not as good as the original, nor is the paper. One word of caution. The cover of the original was kind of metallic golden foil. This new edition is done in a shiny thick paper replicating the original gold cover. Both the new and the old cover are vulnerable to marking, scratching and damage. I would suggest if you're going to read the book, possibly slide it around a table or carry it around, to take the cover off while in use. Underneath the cover is cloth binding which features the painting "Autumnal Cannibalism" from 1936.Last word by Dalí himself on the book:“Les diners de Gala is uniquely devoted to the pleasures of taste … If you are a disciple of one of those calorie-counters who turn the joys of eating into a form of punishment, close this book at once; it is too lively, too aggressive, and far too impertinent for you.”—Salvador DalíReview by Walter O. This book is so great. Its like Hieronymous Bosch and Dali sat down together and made some crazy art and some crazy recipies. Tons of wonderful art in this book, interspersed with bizarre recipies. I'm not sure they're odd due to Dali, or odd due to being 70s french, but this book is a lot of fun to read. It's huge too. I doubt ill ever make a recipie from the book, unless im having some surrealist party, but im certain ill read this book over and over again just for fun. And at $35? Who are you kidding, if you made it here just get it! You wont regret it.

More a great decorative piece than a cookbook, at least in my home. Beautiful binding, vivid photos and editorial layout inside. The actual content is... almost laughably pretentious (A Monarchy of Intelligence, "The elegant anatomy of a naked woodcock, laid out upon a dish attains, one could say, the proportions of the highest raphaelites perfection." [omg, eye-roll].) Still, super interesting nonetheless. If you're like me, you'd want it for the art and as a cool coffee table book versus a gastronomical reference. (I definitely do not see myself making any of these recipes--not buying 1 oz of caviar per person and 24 quail eggs anytime soon.) Would make a great gift for art and/or food lovers, though.Arrived promptly and perfectly in tact.

This book is crazy. Unsurprisingly if you know Dali. Dali was a genius and definately a crazy character. Anyone could tell that by listening to him. Wouldn't have made all the amazing art he wasn't that way. This book is very interesting and as imaginative as it gets. Don't expect to learn much about cooking. It's a bunch of erotic stories tied to food. I bought a couple of these books as gifts to family. They really liked them. I didn't know what to expect of this book when I bought them. I bought them for the art. Very interesting. Probably only for people who think outside the box. Don't hesitate to buy if you're into Dali. Very high-quality book.

This is the fantastic book that I've been craving for the last 40 years, or so. Thanks Taschen! The only disappointment is that it's printed on matte paper, not glossy paper. Not a big deal, though.

Always wanted this book - it's incredible and I didn't have to pay $3,000 for a copy! Even if you never make a recipe - it's worth having for the artwork and photos! Great gift for the art lover in your life!

Holy Moly - This book is gorgeous. There are tons of full color photos of the food of art and Dali's lifestyle. I bought this as present for my husband and had to take the plastic wrap off since the book was delivered in the pouring rain (sorry side rant), and I was blown away by the beauty of the pictures. I can't wait for him to open the book on Christmas morning, he is a chef and huge Dali fan, so it will be a great gift.

Pretty awesome cookbook. For a cookbook collector, this is a must have. It's huge, too. I didn't realize it was going to be so massive. Worth the $$. it is full of interesting recipes and pictures. Am I the only one noticing the misprint on the first recipe? The ingredients for bamako soup are actually the ingredients for the recipes on page 58. You can find the correct ingredient list from the original printing online though.
