The writing is clear and concise.

Dr. Reid's awards and contributions to mental health education and forensic psychiatry distinguish him among peers. His writing skill is worth noting: he communicates so succinctly in layman's language that I never had to read a sentence twice for meaning. Without ever pandering to the sensational, he masterfully, seamlessly, introduces and intersperses Holmes' background with poignant vignettes of victims on July 20 in the Aurora theatre. Throughout the the book, the question of "Why" simmers, seeking an answer. The author writes well. He's a forensic psychiatrist, but he writes with minimal medical jargon. James Holmes is mentally ill but was aware that shooting people at the movie theater was wrong.The book talks about some of the individuals who were killed. Several died because they were protecting family members. The book's focuses are Holmes and establishing that he was competent to stand trial. All the while, it never loses sight of the people who were murdered and injured.I wish we could hear more about how his family is dealing with his crime and how they feel. They too are victims.

This was possibly the best book I’ve ever read. I rarely review books because I feel enjoyment of them is very subjective, but I am making an exception in this case. This book is absolutely fascinating. I hated to finish it (which I did in 1 weekend because I couldn’t put it down.) I am a clinical Social Worker, specializing in trauma and I found the author to be extraordinarily insightful, interesting and knowledgeable. Highly recommended
