This classic study of Mark Twain was written in the 1960s by James Melville Cox, then a professor at Dartmouth. I had taken every class he offered before leaving Indiana University and also took his School of Letters course in Twain during my graduate studies. I know that Mr. Cox did not enjoy writing, leaving us the poorer for it. But in this book, really he says everything necessary about Twain, and the book is cited in Bloom and other current, important scholars. HIghly recommend.

Professor Cox is a treasure -- no understanding of Twain can begin without him. Those who enjoyed his classroom are forever grateful.

I started reading this book on my train ride home on Thursday night and became so engrossed I spent much of Friday and Saturday reading it as well. This is the kind of book you can’t put down but you also don’t want to end. If you like dystopian futures you’ll like this book, but you’ll also like it if you could care less about dystopian futures but love a fast-paced plot, compelling characters, and an incredibly sexy romance. This reminded me of Battlestar Galactica in its dangerous characters, excellent fight scenes, sexual tension, and futuristic narrative. Highly recommended, I hope Anna Burke’s next book comes out soon!

Readers of dystopian fiction will find a plausible (sadly) and dangerous world, peopled by sympathetic and engaging characters-some of whom happen to be pirates!. The characters live, fight, and struggle against this backdrop of a world in which survival is guaranteed to none. In addition, Burke's lively prose and subtle sense of humor and the twisting, turning plot kept me going long after bedtime!This novel's watery world becomes tangible with the fascinating innovations in energy and food sources which have enabled humans to survive in this bleak future. The care with which this setting is constructed reflects careful research on the part of the author.I thoroughly enjoyed this first novel from Anna Burke and look forward to future books!

Compass Rose is one of the best lesfic books I have read in a long time. Set in a dystopian future where global warming has forced humanity to live on and under the perilous seas, the book will take you on a rollicking high seas romp filled with sexy pirates, fearsome sea monsters and an protagonist who is both relatable and totally unique at the same time. I particularly enjoyed the complex world building, unique story line and memorable cast of characters. I almost...almost...wish I had waited to read this book until after the sequel comes out so that I could jump right back into the story.

Boy, I haven't read a huge amount of pirate fiction, but, in my nonexpert opinion, I thought it was great. This author clearly has talent. For a debut novel, it was surprisingly well-written. While there was quite a bit of action, there was a decent amount of political machinations involved as well. I'm usually not as interested in politics centric books; this one, however, was well-balanced. Anyway, enough with that. Rose is a very strong character and had to deal with quite a lot, but still managed to come across as likeable, and well-rounded. I really hope there's a sequel. I feel that loose ends were wrapped up, but I feel that the crew still has more of a story to tell. I'll definitely read it.

Unlikely I'm the target audience, but that's what makes this book so enjoyable: you don't have to be a YA lesbian to fall in love with Rose and cheer her successes. I was most impressed with Anna's research as she constructed a believable post-apocalypse world, but what I really enjoyed was getting to know her characters. Wish there would be a sequel.

If you like pirates, dystopian future worlds, adventure, lesbian drama, and nail-biting tension (sexual or otherwise), you have found THE perfect book. And if you don’t like those thing, why are you here? Broaden your horizons, read this book: it will change your mind about everything listed above.Burke is a talented writer who uses keen imagery and beautifully written prose to draw you, with a pull stronger than any current, into Compass Rose’s world. The characters feel so real; their stories resonate even against the unfamiliar backdrop of giant squid and mercenary life. This may be her debut novel, but Burke certainly Rose to the occasion. Can’t wait to read what comes next!

lesbian pirate romance novel. I mean, what more could you ask for? Burke does a superb job with world building this post-climate change future, her characters are memorable and complex, the action fast paced. Compass Rose is an extremely fun ride.

If you adore the pirate genre, this book will be right up your alley. I do wish they were more details on the futuristic aspects of the world, but it's a great pirate novel nonetheless.
