This is a delightfully fun series. I'm currently reading it to my 12 year old who giggles constantly as we breeze through each chapter. It's lighthearted with a spark of mystery without being too bogged down with "who done it?" It's a refreshing take on witches, the supernatural, private detectives, and smart female leads.I'll be honest, it's not "The Witching Hour" by Anne Rice - by any stretch. But, I don't think that's the author's intention. This book is pure entertainment, the mysteries don't play center stage as much as Jill discovering she's a witch does. While Kathy (Jill's sister) annoys me regularly, clearly she's a well enough written character that she inspires an emotional response, even if it's just irritation. It's almost a "Murder, She Wrote" meets the lighter (very light) aspects of "Charmed" with just a fun, light, twist of "Harry Potter." Although, I certainly wouldn't compare it to "Harry Potter."Bottom line, if you are looking for a silly, fun romp that doesn't take itself seriously and certainly doesn't expect the readers to do so either - this is your series.
I think I'm on book #13 in this series, so obviously there is something deeply enjoyable about reading them or I wouldn't bother; however, if you are picky about your protagonist be warned that the main character is fairly immature/unrealistic. I'm just going to address the biggest issues I have with her, like for instance "she's a complete doormat", everyone dictates to her what she must do, from her bullying Grandmother to her talking cat, and by the third book I was over it. She is a grown woman and a professional private investigator (presumably) so why can she not stand up to anyone, ever? It's unrealistic. Also, "she lies to her family and the people closest to her on a daily basis', and, while I'm sure everyone is guilty of a little white lie sometimes, these lies are ridiculous and in almost every instance the truth would have been far more acceptable. It's not endearing, it's bordering on pathological! "She's not trustworthy", she agrees to things she never plans to follow through with, she is thinking of what excuse she is going to use even as she is making the promise to do it. Again, something we all might do in an extenuating circumstance, but if you are doing it two to three times a week with everyone in your life, there is a much bigger problem. Bottom line, If the main character would only behave with the emotional maturity of someone her actual age, these books could be so, so much better; and, while I can't say I loved this series, I can say in it's own way it is strangely addicting. Also, someone needs to strangle that Grandma, please.
I just discovered this series and really enjoyed it. There are some elements to this witch story that are common to others like it. However the first person narrative is really fun and original. Characters are original and quirky and the dialogue is so real life "girl snarky". I laughed all the way through it. The mystery plots revolve around the general dismay of the main character and her everyday challenges, mixing reality in with the fantasy. I usually skip the "added in" sex exploits in fantasy literature so I was glad there weren't any hot and botheredness to bypass here. Also there is no leftover cliff hanger feeling at the end. The author tidies things up but leaves you wanting more. You will want to read the series.
This is a fun and quirky cozy mystery that had me smiling off and on and outright laughing a few times.Jill is trying desperately to succeed as a PI following in her Dad's footsteps but not a lot of jobs are coming her way till the day she is hired to find a serial killer cause the police are ignoring the possibility that their town even has a serial killer. In the meantime Jill's biological Mom is dying and she is called to the nursing home because she wants to tell Jill something before she dies. Prior to this her mother has always rebuffed any attempts on Jill's part to meet and get to know each other. Then on her deathbed she calls Jill a witch. Jill is hurt and disappointed as one would expect. What follows is a fun awakening for Jill and a mystery that comes full circle. I love the characters which all have different personalities, some cute, some eccentric and some sneaky. I definitely will be reading more of this series.
This is not deep insightful writing - it is simply a fun read. And for me it was very fun, fun enough to get a 4 1/2 Star rating!I loved Jill, the main character, and I loved the way she freely contradicted 'in her head' almost everything she said aloud when arguing with the pushy people...and animals...in her life. I have older brothers and I can truly understand it. I had to laugh at many of Jill's internal comments, and though she may try to fool others, at least she's honest to herself. I'm afraid I'd do the same thing to the smart-alecky cop, and especially her bossy sister! It was fun reading how Jill became a witch, and how she was very reluctant to believe it. And unlike that dumb Samantha from "Bewitched," Jill isn't afraid to use her powers - with hilarious results. I appreciated that Jill didn't rush off and do anything stupid while investigating the mystery in the story. That's one of my biggest pet peeves for most cosy type mysteries. Jill was smart enough to take precautions before she confronted a bad guy. And I have to admit, it sure would be nice to speed up your reflexes, blast things with lightning, or add super strength to yourself once in awhile.I'm not usually a fan of supernatural stories and characters (i.e. witches, wolverines, vampires, etc) but I'm going for the second book of this series. I can't wait to see what Jill does next!
