In a previous incarnation, writer Dominick Dunne was the toast of Hollywood--entertaining movie stars and socialites and invited by moguls to clambakes and black-tie dances. Long before he started churning out his romans à clef set in the private recesses of Hollywood and penthouses of New York City and his dispatches from notorious murder trials, he spent his days on movie sets, producing films like Ash Wednesday and working as an executive at various studios. In the off-hours, he and his wife Lenny ate dinner with Vincente Minnelli, Jack Benny, Rock Hudson, and Elizabeth Montgomery. They went to beach parties hosted by Jane Fonda and Roddy McDowall--and threw not a few bashes of their own, attended by, well, everyone and often photographed for Vogue magazine. Dunne seemed to carry his camera with him everywhere and "was always sticking [it] into someone's face." Kirk Douglas biting into an oversized hotdog, a scantily clad Paul Newman perusing a picnic table, Princess Margaret smoking, Mia Farrow dancing, and Natalie Wood hamming. Each weekend he carefully arranged his snapshots along with the week's invitations, telegrams, and news-clippings into a set of scrapbooks. The Way We Lived Then closely resembles those scrapbooks, filled as it is with images culled from them. Dunne sews the scraps together with a loose memoir that moves from the mundane (how the house was decorated for a certain party, how the subjects of a given photo were feeling about one another at the time) to the grand (meditations on his marriage and his children). All of these famous friends, glittery parties, and cozy evenings did add up to a picture-perfect life for a time. But by the mid '60s, Dunne was drinking hard, insulting acquaintances in public, and being a perfectly terrible husband to the lovely Lenny. He was soon arrested carrying drugs into the country from Mexico, divorced, nearly poverty-stricken, and living in a cabin in Oregon. Before becoming a bestselling novelist (The Two Mrs. Grenvilles) and Vanity Fair correspondent noted for skeptical dispatches from the O.J. Simpson and Menendez brothers murder trials, Dunne was a TV and movie producer in the 1960s. Less a memoir than a scrapbook, this slim volume consists largely of Dunne's often appealing celebrity snapshots. There's a young Warren Beatty at the piano, Elizabeth Taylor in white mink and a gimlet-eyed Princess Margaret, poised with a cigarette holder. The book's subtitle is well-taken. Plenty of names are dropped, though there's a paucity of fresh or compelling anecdotes. Dunne notes the "deep devotion" of Nancy and Ronald Reagan; in person, Elizabeth Taylor "is even more breathtaking than on the screen"; Natalie Wood, who "always looked like a million bucks," checks her makeup in the mirror-bright blade of a butter knife. There are exceptions to the pat anecdotes: a vicious Frank Sinatra, for instance, makes a memorable appearance. The book is further distinguished by the pages that focus on Dunne's own capitulation to drugs, alcohol and promiscuity; the irrevocable damage his tailspin wrought on his heroic wife (herself suffering from MS); and his slow but determined recovery. What a trip down memory lane! The book is full of black & white glossies of stars of yesteryear caught in candid moments, & the recounting of events was fascinating. I was a longtime fan of Dominick's & through this book learned a lot about his life & I grew to be a fan of Lenny's as well.This book has elements of an enduring love story, backstories & backstage gossip, comedy & tragedy. It's not a 'fluffy' book.He did not sugarcoat his downward spiral, nor did he make excuses or resort to self-pity.Well worth reading!

The book is smashing. Buy it. If you're very young and not deep into movies, you might be disappointed. However, if you're a movie maven of any age, you'll recognize almost everyone.In many ways, the photos bring to life all of the names that turn up in other books about the movies - producers, producers wives, etc.Dunne knows his audience, though, and most of the book's photos depict highly recognizable faces. It was fun, for example, to finally see a photo of Natalie Wood's habit of checking her makeup in her reflection in her silverware. Many books about Ms. Wood write about this habit, but Dunne got the charming photo of Wood spoofing herself.A few of the photos are startling. For example, there is a four-photo montage of Elizabeth Montgomery trying to make her husband, Gig Young, jealous by dancing with George Hamilton. The two last photos show Montgomery casting a positively wicked look over her shoulder, then George Hamilton dissolving into tears.Dunne's writing, as usual, is so spare it seems simplistic. But as a longtime fan, I admire the way he just put the words on the page, without excessive embellishment. He seems to always be asking himself, "How can I make my point in five words? In four? In three?"If you're a movie fan, this is a must-have for your bookshelf.

Great book for anyone who loved Dominick Dunne. Book came in fantastic condition-cover was in great shape as well. Has great tidbits of his time in the film industry and raising his family. Lots of pictures

I loved this book. My only disappointment is that it ended and I didn't want it to. I wanted more photos and more stories. Dominick Dunne is my top favorite writer and I read all that he writes. In this book, he tells of his family - the happiness and the tragedy through pictures and prose - mingled with his fabulous party days as a Hollywood insider who knew many of the rich and famous. He has felt pain in the most tragic way - the murder of his beloved daughter and a divorce from the love of his life. I wish I could meet him in person as he is surely to be a fascinating man.

This book does a fantastic job at explaining where Indy Ball is, where it’s going, and how to use it to your advantage as a player. Fantastic read

A nostagic look at a vanished world and way of life. I found the first half of the book most interesting as it dealt with the Murie's life in the early 20th century, Incidents through out the book, though, reminded me that in this enormous landscape of possibilities, how easily, by their innocent choices, their story could have been one of tragedy and survival rather than one of wonder and exultation. It is a razor's edge of existence in such places, with the unexpected always lurking in the shadows. This is a story that cannot be duplicated today, so just sit back, relax, and enjoy a warm and gentle reminiscence of one who was there.

Margaret Murie's story of her life from a child in Fairbanks to a newly wed honeymooning in the far north to the work she, Olaus, and their colleagues did over the years to document the flora and fauna will fascinate those who love the north country. As will the friendships that blossomed in challenging a environment and joint efforts that resulted in establishing the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

This book is so moving...to read what it was like to just "head north"; the sights and experiences, the dangers and joys, the trials and tribulations from a woman who lived it, is just incredible. My girlfriend read it out loud in the car as we drove the vast distances of Alaska. It made the scenery so much more alive! The book made life in Alaska so much more real. Margaret Murie's appreciation of nature helped me "visit Alaska" in a much more satisfying way, less hurried more studied. I highly recommend this book.

This is perhaps the most inspiring and entertaining book I have read in years. Mardie Murie is to me the quintissential woman, a true feminist, and first female to graduate from the University of Alaska, who follows her own star while completely respecting the stars of others. Her prose is "luscious," intelligent, rich in imagry, and filled with honesty and joy. She writes about her life growing up in Alaska at the turn of the twentieth century, and how she transcends cold and harsh conditions to follow the love of her life, Dr. Murie, as he studies the caribou herds in Alaska's wilderness. She even finds breathtaking romance on this amazing life adventure, spreading her love of life and nature to everyone she encounters. I can't recommend this book enough!

I, first, heard of Mardy Murie and her husband, Olaus, while watching John Denver's The Wildlife Concert. He wrote A Song For All Lovers for their deep and abiding love for each other and for the state of Alaska. The song's beauty gave rise to my curiousity. And, recently, while watching a documentary of Mardy's life, I became determined to read this book about her life.This book is a must have. Mrs. Murie paints with words, a picture so vivid of Alaska's tundras and plains, that I felt as if I were part of it. The lifestyle was hard, but satisfying, and this woman's life was nothing short of fascinating. Mardy Murie is a living testament to the strength and beauty of women, and she leaves a shining example of what a woman can do. In her assistance in Olaus' work for the ANWR and other Alaskan Land Conservancies, to her carrying on of that work, she is a beacon to us all of what we can do.Buy it...read it. You will fall in love with Alaska and with Mardy.

This book was recommended to me by a tour guide at Denali Park in Alaska. The story will remind you of the wild country and what it means to be strong, independent, and to fight for what you believe in. Oh yeah and PS: a great love story. I wish I could thank my tour guide for the recommendation!

Murie writes with exquisite detail describing the Alaskan wilderness. It was certainly easy to imagine what she was seeing. I did feel the book became a bit mired down with rhetoric and thus was a slower read. For those with a keen interest in Alaskan wilderness in the early part of the 1900's onward this would be one to spend time reading. She was an amazing and very courageous woman.

Bought this for a friend of mine who is just like Mardy Murie. I read this book and her other one about the times they were living in the Tetons near Jackson Hole. I moved to Montana from Michigan for all of the wondrous wilderness and wildlife out here. My friend is an older woman, tough as can be - there isn't anything she can't do (physically or mentally). I'm sure she'll love the book as much as I did.
