3.5 stars, rounded up. I liked this book, but I didn't love it and I probably wouldn't read it again. The story opens with Matthew MacEnroy and his men staking shelter from Rebel forces at a farmhouse. The house is the home of Abigail Jenson and her parents. When the Rebels arrive, Abbie races inside to warn her mother and father.Weeks earlier her family was attacked, her brother was "pressed" into service, her father beaten and her mother violated, Abbie was spared because she had hidden. Her father is near death and her mother is mentally unstable. When she enters the house, Matt and his men are there, but she soon realizes that they are going to help her. Abbie tries to warn her mother, but the woman will not listen. Abbie is a crack shot and impresses Matt with her ability. When one of his men is wounded, she cares for him, but is not able to save her parents. The Rebels set the house afire and there is nothing Abbie can do to save them or her home.Matt offers to take her to the town where his company is stationed and will no other options, Abbie agrees. When they arrive at the town, Abbie is taken to the "Benton House" which houses various war widows and orphans. Abbie settles in and even begins to assist the doctor. She and Matt do not have a lot of interaction at this point in the book - but they are both attracted to the other. This part of the book focuses more on Abbie's relationship with the women and children in the house, especially her roommate Julia. Julia is in love with Robert, one of the soldiers stationed at the camp and they plan to marry. When it becomes obvious that Julia is expecting a child, Abbie tells her she must marry now. Robert and Julia marry and then tragedy strikes.Matt and Abbie have been spending time together, Matt knows he is interested in her, but is not sure if he is ready to marry or if what he feels for her is more than lust. When they are alone, the passion between them is undeniable, and they become intimate but they are constantly interrupted. When they slip away together a few days after the wedding, they spot a band of men sneaking up the river. They rush back to town to warn the others and then a battle ensues, in which Robert is mortally wounded. Julia is brought to his side and is inconsolable when he dies. Her grief is consuming and causes her to go into labor. When her son is born, Abbie hopes it will be enough to drag her out of her grief - but it isn't and when the town is attacked again, Abbie finds Julia near death on her husband's grave. She takes Julia home and goes for the doctor. At the medical tent, she asks the doctor to check on Julia and then learns that Matt has been wounded. She tends Matt while the doctor takes care of Julia. Sadly, Julia is dying and she begs Abbie to take care of her son. Abbie agrees and when Julia passes, she has her buried next to her beloved Robert.Soon after, the company of soldiers is commanded to move south, Matt is told to go home, his commission is almost up and Abbie is recruited to take him home. There is a heart wrenching moment when Abbie must say goodbye to Noah, one of the orphaned children. She promises she will come back for him, but with no home or husband and a newborn baby, she is not able to take him at this moment. Noah is upset and refuses to see her off. They journey back to Matt's family and he again wonders what his intentions towards Abbie are and she wonders as well. They are attacked by marauders but manage to reach his home unscathed.Matt's family welcomes Abbie with open arms and they too question Matt's intentions. Matt and Abbie are perfect for one another, but Matt can't seem to decide what he feels for her.The book was good, but it was a little boring and repetitious. There is no real conflict and nothing keeping Abbie and Matt apart, except Matt's inability to decide what he wants to do with her. I honestly was not very happy with him, he took her virginity and took no precautions to keep her from getting pregnant, but didn't plan to marry her - it seemed dishonorable to me. The story drags a bit due to the lack of conflict and Matt's indecision becomes a little tiresome. But the secondary characters were good and the love scenes were steamy, there are a couple of heart breaking moments and a few surprises as well as a lovely reunion scene for Abbie. All in all not a bad book, but I had hoped for more. This is the second book in the series, but it could easily be read as a stand alone title.*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that was provided to me by NetGalley and the publisher*

The two main characters are likeable but the story line drones on, underdeveloped and going no where for a long time. I like this author so I would never want to discourage readers from reading her books but I would say a heroine who is so strong in so many ways would be of such loose morals or unwilling to ask the man set on seducing her straight out "where is this going between us?" At the very least. Why did she let go of all her standards when she was so aware Medicaid of where promiscuity often led for a young woman in that time period. Very disappointed that there was not more of a declaration between the two.

I read this book the day after I read the first in the series and did enjoy the storyline and of course got my happy ending but: I do not think that this was a good follow-up book to the first. In the first of the series, Matthew was a skilled wood crafter and this was ignored, also one brother was not mentioned in this book at all and the name of the Powell brothers was totally changed to Jones(very inconsistent). I did enjoy the Civil War portion of the book and do look forward to reading about the other brothers but hope that Ms. Howell pays more attention to detail and the building of the relationships between the H/h before they become intimate as this story seemed to rush the intimacy.

This is the story of Matthew and Abbie. It takes place during the waning months of the Civil War. Matthew is a Union officer who with his small group takes refuge at Abbie's farm. When her parents are killed and her home burned he takes her to a nearby town where she finds refuge with other ladies who are displaced. There are children in the home too. This is one of Hannah Howells great stories. Hated to put it down

I love Hannah Howell books. She is a very articulate writer with a wicked since of humor that seems to come through in her books. I believe that I know the Murray clan very well. This series of Scotsman living in America in the 1800's is very interesting. So many people came to America during this time period. Some found success, others did not. But all helped settle this country.

Better than first book in series but not by much. Still bad editing job, confusing conversations where you have no clue how is saying what and plot changes that have horrible flow, one moment he is in wagon sitting next to her and the next moment he is complaining that he is riding his horse too soon after injury!?? Also, the Powell's from the first book for some unknown reason are now the Jones brothers...what the...!?!?

Another great story about tragedy, love, kindness, all together in one book! Matthew is a Union soldier helps save Abigail from some Confederate soldiers attacking her family's home her parents are killed and he takes her the city they are protecting. Things progress from there and happy ever after!💞

I was so looking forward to this book. Unfortunately, it was just not great. . Sorry, but it was just plain boring. The characters were nice, but just okay. The romance was missing. The two main characters found love with each other, but, I’m not even sure how. Again, very disappointing.

Another great read from Susie Kelly! I have several of the authors books and have thoroughly enjoyed them. I Wish I Could Say I'm Sorry gives you a look into Susie's early life in the UK and Kenya. After being asked to make a life changing decision at the young age of 9, she is unwillingly sent back to the UK to live with her father's parents and then into a Catholic boarding school. The story takes you on into Susie's adult life as she enters into marriage. Not the best of circumstances to say the least. It seems that she can never catch a break. The author tells the story without needing sympathy for herself and her circumstances. It's a beautifully written memoir. I have gone right into reading the sequel- Safari Ants, Baggy Pants And Elephants: A Kenyan Odyssey.

Oh dear! Such a disappointment! This is an adolescent whine about all the things she didn't have - not a thing about any one else. A whine about her family, about her bike, about how far she had to go to ride her horse, about her marriage, about England, about .. you name it. Not any recognition of what was going on around her; what was going on in her family; what were the choices she actually had. So sad; she missed the point.

Like other good books I have read, this one stayed with me for a long time. I have read a few of her other books before this one, and I find myself wondering how knowing more about her childhood would have affected my perception of her and her adult adventures in France. I ordered this book because I enjoyed her other books and I like reading about other people's lives that are so different from my own. This book was darker but this woman is definitely very strong and a survivor. My heart went out to Susie Kelly and I find myself wanting very much to meet her and have a conversation - perhaps because the book left me wanting more. (and I would tell her not to be so hard on herself)/ I would have liked some more information about her mother and her father but given the (lack of) communication in her family, perhaps she doesn't have more to write. I would definitely recommend this but agree with another reviewer that while it may start a little slow at the beginning, it definitely picks up when the family moves to Kenya. I couldn't wait to find out how this book ended. I hope she writes a transition from her life in Kenya to where she is today.

This is a wonderful story of a young girl brought from an England suffering from food shortages to beautiful Kenya not long after WWII. Brought with happy parents from the gray streets of England to a colorful vibrant colony where food was suddenly tasty and plentiful and life was easy with servants, Susie's life was went from idyllic to perplexing all too quickly. You will laugh through your tears and cry through your chuckles. Filled with loving characters from Nan, to Cinderella, to loving Colonists who share their home with a sad little girl, this book shares a happy/sad story far removed from most of our lives (unless we had the luck to move from England to AFrica). I highly recommend this as a carthatic read that you won't be able to put down.

Susie Kelly's books have a real charm about them. Unlike some of her other writings, this book is not a cookbook, but rather a sort of autobiography covering her life from age about 8 to roughly into her 20's. As an autobiography, I found it interesting, especially since it takes place partly in Kenya, partly in Europe and partly in England. The societal contrasts of these three cultures make interesting reading, even as revealed by a not yet mature young girl. Although she does not explicitly emphasize her rebellious nature, still, it is clear she lived life with her own very independent personal style, sometimes triumphing over adversity, other times burdened by it, and other times victimized by it. She makes no apologies, indeed, seems to almost unaware that some of her unhappy misfortunes were the consequences of her own (poor) choices. I have four daughters (not to mention six sons), and I can see Suzie as one of my own daughters, who was independent as a young girl, and after suffering some hard life knocks, finally matured at about age 30 ... and has been a responsible and "solid citizen" ever since. I sense in Suzie's writings a spirit kindred to my daughter's: a sort of rebellious (but not using that word herself) nature, developing a late maturity into a solid member of society. In that sense, this book is an unfinished work ... and, Suzie, I encourage you to write a sequel describing your life's next chapter.Did the book hold my interest? Well, I started it about 10 AM and did not put it down until I read the last page at about 6:30 PM the same day! I gave the book 4 stars because it is an unfinished story. Suzie, I encourage you to write the next volume companion to this one, perhaps covering the next twenty years?I gave this book only 4 stars because it is an unfunished work,

DeLorme publishes very decent atlases, including this one of the two smallest New England states, Connecticut and Rhode Island. The maps in the book are at a scale of one inch to 11 miles, and the detail is fairly good outside downtown metropolitan areas. Certainly, the map sheets are good enough to anywhere a driver might need to go. Not necessarily useful for off-road navigation. The atlas includes a gazetteer and listings of parks and recreation sites. Recommended.

Unbelievable and disappointing that there is no close up street map of Newport, RI, a major town, a huge economic hub, historical interest, etc.Description should just disclose what's included.Spotty detail.I just expected much more from Delorme, a stellar map publisher.Good map of Providence however.

I've found these to be the best. As an avid motorcyclist seeking the challenges of tarmac, I just look for the squiggliest lines and try to get to them. I really appreciate knowing in advance whether I'm climbing a mountain or squeezing into a narrow gorge.

Unlike atlases for all other states, this one has blurry images. It looks like the publisher first created the images, and then upscaled them for some reason, but it created blur around all lines.

Excellent in every respect. One (minor) fault of almost all volumes of maps: centering / binding of some pages is awkward.

Arrived even though we had a snow storm

use these maps to find unpaved roads particularly in state parks. like all map books it is sometimes hard to follow at the margins.that said the info is all there and very helpful

Thank you!

Latina

From Publishers Weekly

Sampling works from over 30 contemporary female Latin writers, this is a worthwhile and fashionable digest. The stories, recollections, letters and essays range widely in topic, tone, style and quality. Unfortunately, most of the strongest pieces are buried deep in the book. Among them, the story "Personality Fabulosa" by Monica Palacios captures with deceptive levity a heavy crush at the moment it develops into mutual courtship. Also terrific, Lucha Corpi's essay, "Epiphany: The Third Gift" depicts a tomboy distressing her traditional parents, who find solace in her bookishness: "'When you educate a man,' my father would often tell my younger sister and me, 'you educate an individual. But when you educate a woman, you educate the whole family.'" Mary Helen Ponce's "Just Dessert" deftly portrays a disastrous dinner date, as the woman futilely tries to concentrate on the man's gorgeous lips and ignore the bigotry coming out of them. The stories of Cristina Garcia, Aurora Levins Morales, Kathleen Ann Gonzalez and Judith Ortiz Cofer also work brilliantly. Less successfully, other writers rely too much on their ethnicity for interest rather than intrinsic merit. For example, Esmeralda Santiago's excerpt comes across as politically correct and facile: "Americanos talk funny when they speak Spanish." By and large, however, the several gems in this collection outweigh the weak parts. Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From the Back Cover

Latina brings together a remarkable selection of writings, gathering essays, short stories, and excerpts from novels that have attracted a wide readership and critical praise, as well as original pieces by lesser-known authors. Many of the works here draw on the special experience of being a member of a minority group; all speak to the universal human condition. The contributors include such well-known names as Sandra Cisneros, Julia Alvarez, Denise Chavez, Ana Castillo, Cristina Garcia, and Sandra Benitez. Mexican Americans, Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, and other women of the Americas are all represented. They write of their heritage; of their lives in an often alienating land; of the joys and sorrows of their particular communities; and of their political concerns, their hopes, and their dreams.

This book was like an inspiration to me when I needed something to totally make me open my eyes. I read this book while incarcerated and the stories in this book were so real and touching and not a day goes by that I don't look at my bookshelf and look just to make sure it is still there, and smile. I have loaned this book to my oldest daughter to read after she was 15 and I will also loan it to my youngest daughter in a couple of years after she turns 15. Hopefully this is a new tradition in my family and this book makes it's rounds to all the women in my family.

For all of you Latinas! Read this book, discover the voice that many of us don't express openly because of the dilemma that comes by living in between two cultures; the one you live in and the one you are born with.

I enjoyed this book, and many of the stories really inspired me.

The editor, Lillian Castillo-Speed, wrote in the Introduction to this 1995 collection, "Latina literature is not new. It has been published by university presses, small presses, and Latina authors themselves... Recently Latina prose has been widely anthologized, and several novels by Latina authors have been published by major publishing houses. Obviously there is keen interest in the writings of Chicanas, Cuban American women, Puerto Rican women, and women refugees from Central American countries... new Latina writers have taken the English language and have made it their own... it reflects the reality of women who live in two worlds. Latinas are American and yet not American at the same time."The book contains writings from more than 30 women: short stories, excerpts from novels, personal essays, and autobiographical and political writing. One writes, "I call myself a Chicana writer. Not a Mexican-American writer, not a Hispanic writer, not a half-breed writer. To be a Chicana is not merely to name one's racial/cutural identity, but also to name a politic, a politic that refuses assimilation into the U.S. mainstream." (Pg. 215) Later, she adds, "An art that subscribes to integration into mainstream America is not Chicano art." (Pg. 218)Another asserts, "We oppress each other trying to out-Chicano each other, vying to be the 'real' Chicanas, to speak like Chicanos. There is no one Chicano language just as there is no one Chicano experience... Chicano Spanish is as diverse linguistically as it is regionally." (Pg. 252) The same writer adds, "When not copping out... we call ourselves Mexican, referring to race and ancestry; mestizo when affirming both our Indian and Spanish... ancestry; Chicano when referring to a politically aware people born and/or raised in the U.S.; Raza when referring to Chicanos; tejanos when we are Chicanos from Texas." (Pg. 255)This is an excellent, wide-ranging collection of writings, and is highly-recommended.

Los Angeles to Miami, Mexico City to Cuba, New York to New Mexico; ungrateful children, children despising their culture, children seeking to salvage vestiges of their passed-on relatives, lesbian roommates, mercenaries, and artists all team up to paint an immaculately profound and vivid portrait of the experiences of Latinas in the Western Hemisphere.Latina presents perhaps the most cohesive set of narratives, fictional stories, semi-ficitional tales, science fiction, biographical, autobiographical, and journalistic-type essays ever to constitute a single volume. The writing and the voices reach to deep levels and move the reader at any and all levels. It is definitely recommended that the reader have a familiarity with Spanish, Spanish expressions, or easy access to somebody with either and the patience to constantly answer one's inquiries about those used throughout the text. All at once a vivid portrait of Latina life throughout the U.S., it leaves the reader spell-bound and craving further insight.

This is a beautiful collection of short stories from some of the most well-known and well-respected Latina writers, writing today, as well as some authors who are just emerging today. Some of these writers include Julia Alvarez ("Snow"), Sandra Cisneros ("Only Daughter"), and Ana Castillo ("My Mother's Mexico").This is a wonderful introduction to the jewel trove of talent present in the Latina community exclusively. We hear about universal plights, ups and downs, comedies and tragedies that are truly universal. Also, we hear the stories of the daughters of immigrants to this country, as well the experiences of women whose families have in the United States for many generations (those who were cultivating the earth, ten generations back, before the United States was even the nation that is today). I highly reccomend that you read this collection of stories, for your education, as well as for your awareness. It is inclusive toward all readers. I include myself with this great group of women, being a bicultural person, growing up as an "American," yet feeling a connection to both parts. Beautiful......

An excellent assessment of how Fed actions impact stock prices and how to take advantage of Fed interest rate trends. The book ends with a fairly easy approach to equity investing that delivers an amazing return premium of 8.8%/year.Their approach breaks the Fed interest rate changes into Expansive, Indeterminate and Restrictive situations depending on the direction of changes to the Federal Funds Rate and the Fed Discount Rate. Various investment strategies are presented for each of these situations (Value versus Growth, Real Estate, Commodities, Sector Rotation, International, and Fixed-Income among others) with some being highly successful and others not. Their work is summarized with a Rotation Strategy (each consisting of five asset classes) that provides above average results for each of the three Fed interest rate change situations. While the book is fairly helpful in how to use their learning, the one glaring omission is lack of a table showing Fed interest rate changes and the Expansive, Indeterminate, and Restrictive situations they map into. It would be helpful to the reader to see exactly how they determined these periods in order for the reader to correctly identify the Fed stance moving forward. There is much to recommend their approach given the Fed’s influence on the U.S. economy. However, to the extent the future differs from the past, the specific strategies suggested may not provide extra return. For example, part of the investment rotation approach involves investing in energy stocks. Energy prices (and oil company valuations) rose nicely for decades under OPECs dominance of oil prices. Will US fracking (and increased fracking worldwide) reverse this trend? Another part of the rotation involves investment in Emerging Markets. China’s rapid growth has contributed strongly to Emerging Markets results. Will the maturing of China’s economy lessen Emerging Markets future returns?

a good book, but perhaps not for the intended reasons...i really enjoyed this book. it is full of interesting data. i think someone wanting to learn more about investments and academic studies would learn a huge amount from this book.but i have a number of questions/concerns:1) would anyone remotely suggest the fed has been anything but expansionary the last 5 years? it's news to me that they raised the discount rate to 0.75% in 2010 and haven't lowered it since but i'm sure the author is correct......2) related to #1. could an indicator not be made from either 1 year or 2 year interest rates as summarizing fed policy? seems alot simpler although it will jump around like the effective fed funds rate too.3) similar to #1 and #2, but is effective fed funds rate going from 0.17% to 0.19% really evidence of any kind of restrictive policy? and of course it will lead to turnover although the other indicator (discount rate) is quite stable.4) the credit crisis of 2008 was extraordinary... wouldn't you have been killed in stocks following this model? of course you would have done well before and after.... note that i haven't completed my read.5) commodities may have done well historically when rates increase but as a commodity investor i am sure not hoping the fed raises rates so my commodity investments do better.... i'm think there's alot going on in oil prices that don't have anything to do with monetary policy and as i said i don't buy that restrictive monetary policy is good for oil prices..... alot of other insights relating to monetary policy to investments do make sense.this probably summarizes #1 through #5 comments but i wish the author(s) had spent more time on the monetary model and less time on the investment implications. i feel the model is too simple and not analyzed thoroughly enough. i can't reconcile thinking that fed policy has been anything but accomodative (QE and QE2) the last 5 years. interest rates have consistently surprised on the downside.great book though as survey of many different investments historically.

First, the writing style is easy to read and it flows well. Second, it is very obvious to me that Bob Johnson and his colleagues did an amazing amount of research to back up various statements and themes with facts and examples. Third, all of the suggestions and points are backed up with great logic that make a lot of sense to me. Fourth, the book should have multiple audiences. I think every portfolio manager would need it as a first read and then as a reference book on his or her shelf. They should refer to it periodically as they may be changing their own investment styles from time to time. Finally, maybe the policy makers at the FED should be made aware of the many findings as they may not be aware of the many linkages Johnson, et al have discovered. Aside from these points, as an academic myself, the book serves as a quick refresher on many classic Finance fronts. For example, it brings in the efficient market hypothesis and the various aspects of the methods for measuring risk at many key places. A minor point is, on the Kindle, the bar diagrams and summary tables seem a bit too small to really read.

The authors address a key influence in today's financial markets- the impact of the Fed and policy positions on investment portfolio performance. This book provides a well presented guide for investing in markets that are increasingly influenced by Fed activity and offer strategy recommendations based on Fed policy shifts. A must read for all serious investors.

This is one of the best books I have ever read on how to use Fed policy in making investment decisions. The authors’ grasp of the interworking of Fed policy and how and why various asset classes have reacted to Fed policy decisions was immeasurably helpful. We have entered an era where central bank policies have an unmitigated impact on asset prices and we need to advance our understanding of the role and impact of central banks on portfolios. I recommend that anyone in an investment decision making capacity read this book.

Review

"One of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 2006""Theories and mysteries can be dispelled with good data from the geologic record, and Erwin (a paleobiologist at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History) offers an authoritative account of the search for these data and for the cause of the extinction. . . . Extinction provides a great reference for researchers and the interested lay reader alike."---Andrew M. Bush, Science"Extinction is a very enjoyable read. . . . It provides a thoroughly up-to-date account of the causes of the end-Permian event and the developments in the field since 1993 as seen through the eyes of one of the key players. . . . Extinction leaves the reader with the (accurate) picture that here is a scientist whose work has significantly advanced our understanding of the greatest extinction event known to science. . . . [A] readable and scholarly account."---Richard J. Twitchett, American Scientist"Douglas Erwin's geological mystery story is engrossing. It contains a tribute to the scientific method--and also the collaborations of research. The book ends with Erwin warning that the Earth is arguably entering another mass extinction period, this time unnatural and man-made. And this time the destruction may well be total."---Lucy Sussex, The Age"Douglas H. Erwin, a Smithsonian paleobiologist and one of the leading experts on the Permian extinction has meticulously sifted through the evidence. . . . His accessible new book, Extinction--written, it seems, both to persuade his colleagues and to educate a lay audience--is told from the perspective of a forensic scientist trying to piece together a quarter-billion-year-old crime scene."---Joshua Foer, Washington Post Book World"Douglas Erwin describes how life on Earth was nearly destroyed at the end of the Permian period, 250 million years ago. . . . The author . . . explain[s] what this paleontological, as well as geological, evidence can tell scientists about the dramatic and deadly shift in the Earth's environment." (Science News)"No one can tell this story better than Douglas Erwin. His book is a superbly written account of what we know about the Permian extinctions. . . . More than a geological story, this book is an excellent model of how science addresses complicated questions." (Choice)"This book does not justify a single, accepted causal sequence of events . . . to account for the end-Permian extinction. Instead, Erwin dissects the evidence for and against each hypothesis, impartially weighing their strengths and weaknesses. Although this book may frustrate readers expecting to learn how life nearly ended 250 million years ago, it will reward them with a fascinating case study in scientific inference, a case that remains very much open."---John P. Hunter, Quarterly Review of Biology"Erwin's book is science writing for the general public at its best and most lucid. Entertaining, informative, and thought provoking." (Northeastern Naturalist)"Erwin offers a thorough overview of one of the most interesting problems in earth history. . . . Erwin takes the readers on an insider's journey that includes adventures in the field, tedious hours in the laboratory, and stimulating but sometimes contentious exchanges among colleagues at scientific meetings. He gives rigorous consideration to every reasonable hypothesis. . . . Erwin's short course is a professional service for geologists (like me) who have read only some of the primary literature on the end-Permian extinction."---Stephen O. Moshier, Books & Culture

Although framed in terms of hypotheses and their tests, Erwin's story unfolds as a gripping who-done-it for the ages."--Andrew H. Knoll, Harvard University, author of Life on a Young Planet"Douglas Erwin is the world's leading expert on the end-Permian extinction. This book will be the standard reference on this crucial event in the history of life. It is a wonderful example of science in action."--Richard Bambach, Virginia Tech"This book provides an up-to-date review and critical appraisal of all we know about the end-Permian mass extinction, a subject that has drawn much popular attention. Complementing its solid scholarship, its friendly style enables educated general readers to get to grips with all the current debates."--Paul Wignall, University of Leeds, author of Mass Extinctions and Their Aftermaths"In conversational prose, Douglas Erwin provides a useful roadmap to a complex scientific subject--an up-to-date treatment of the end-Permian extinction."--Michael J. The title of the book is "Extinction: How Life on Earth Nearly Ended 250 Million Years Ago" and the author is Douglas H. Erwin. Our planet has a sometimes very violent history, which is recorded in its rock strata. How do we decipher it? Geology is one major discipline with the tools, whereas paleontology is another. Strata record a chronology of the Earth based on the premise that older strata lie beneath younger strata. Scientists have compared strata from around the world and matched up similar time periods (i.e.; identical strata). Multi-cell plants and animals have left their fossils in the last half billion years of the Earth's history. Three major divisions (eras) became evident to scientists: the Paleozoic Era, the Mesozoic Era, and the Cenozoic Era. The first era contains the story of primitive multi-cell animals, first fishes, first amphibians, and first reptiles. Then the mother of all global extinctions occurred and wiped out 95% of all species. The next era (Mesozoic) was the age of the dinosaurs and it lasted well over 120 million years. Again, a global extinction wiped out the dinosaurs and several other species. Since that mass extinction event 65 million years ago, new kinds of animals have repopulated the Earth, namely mammals and birds. This book focuses on that major extinction at the end of the Paleozoic and teaches what science can deduce about it.That end-Paleozoic transition is named the Permo-Triassic extinction. The name comes from the last period in the Paleozoic (the Permian) and the first period in the Mesozoic (the Triassic). We are talking about an event that happened one quarter of a billion years ago. The task is extremely challenging because the surface of the Earth is remodeled continuously by erosion, mountain building, subduction of ocean sea floor plates, and other geological processes. The author has done a thorough job of providing the reader with an understanding of the tools available to attack the problem. These tools include radioisotope dating techniques, paleontology considerations, the carbon cycle, which can be used to evaluate conditions in the distant past by measuring the relative amounts of C12 and C13. The author liberally gives credit to the many individual scientists each working on a aspect of the bigger problem. He also examines the different hypotheses that have attempted to explain what caused the mass extinction.Professionals, such as geologists and paleontologists, would be likely to buy this book because they will acquire a powerful reference tool. Moreover, they would make the purchase, knowing in advance, that they can understand the vernicular of the extinction scientist. For others less specialized, the jargon could be an obstacle to understanding the book's contents. Dr. Erwin does attempt to explain the technology to the novice readers and does a good job of it. However, sometimes he forgets that this audience exists and seems to be communicating with his peers alone. The book has photos, charts, graphs and other visual aids which help clarify the textual messages. The extinction was a global event, but there are only a few places on the Earth where evidence still exists. Consequently, the author takes us to China, South Africa, the Rocky Mountains, and other places where he can support his narrative with evidence and examples. The author presents arguments for the several different hypotheses explaining the great extinction, but does not lock on to any particular one as the best hypothesis. He gives an unbiased voice to each of them, with cautionary comments to the readers about obvious flaws in the reasoning or new evidence which negates previous scientific beliefs. Thus, the book is an unbiased account of what science has been able to learn about the Permo-Triassic extinction. I felt that I learned a lot about mass extinctions in general and this extinction in particular. I know that I should reread it at some future time to better lock in my understanding of the book's contents. Hopefully, you can decide from my review whether or not you would want to learn what this book has to teach you.Ralph D. Hermansen, November 4, 2013

This book reads like a murder mystery, with the victim being 95% of all marine life and 70% of terrestrial vertebrates species. This crime, the Permian Extinction, occurred over 250 million years ago but still has not been solved. The author Douglas Erwin, a paleobiologist who has been working on the extinction for the past few decades, identifies identifies possible culprits and the known evidence, but ultimately comes to no conclusion. This makes the book both exciting and fresh (even three years after its initial publication).Erwin names six possible culprits to the extinction:1) a meteor/comet impact, similar to the one that killed the dinosaurs;2) climatic changes from massive volcanic flood basalts in Siberia;3) invasion of invasive species following the creation of the supercontinent Pangea;4) glaciations causing global cooling and a fall in sea level;5) disappearance of oxygen from the oceans (anoxia); and6) a combination of the above.Because the extinction happened so quickly (estimated less than 160,000 years), he suggests that explanation 3, 4, and 6 are less likely. He also isn't convinced by the evidence of a large meteor impact (1) around this time. Furthermore, explanation 5 does not account for the extinctions on land. Thus, the book tentatively concludes that the volcanic flood basalts seem to have played the largest role in the extinction, perhaps by causing runaway global warming. This is a science book, not a book about the scientists. Too many popular books about paleontology, especially those written by journalists, seem to focus on the scientists themselves rather than the actual science. Fortunately, Erwin goes deep into the scientific evidence and presents detailed arguments for each explanation.Perhaps more important than the hard scientific evidence (which may well become outdated by the time you read the book, if it hasn't already), Erwin does a magnificent job showing the process and reasoning that goes into collecting and interpreting the evidence. Rather than state his interpretation of the evidence, Erwin takes the reader through the existing evidence and the questions or concerns he has with it. Most of the book consists of his summary of paleobiologists' toolkit and the research on the Permian extinction. He only brings the evidence together to discuss the potential culprits in the last few chapters. However, by writing the book this way, the reader is able to assess the evidence for himself.Erwin's style also encourages readers to keep a healthy sense of doubt, especially since more than once he admits his past positions on the extinction were probably wrong. In fact, he does suggest that more evidence regarding a meteor impact has recently emerged and may contradict his "preferred" theory.Overall this is a very interesting book, but is a long read, especially for those readers who - like me - have no formal training in paleontology or geology. However, the books provides a great science education for those willing to put in the time.

The author does a fine job explaining the possible causation of the Permo-Triassic extinction. He keeps the necessary technical babble to a minimum, making this book (mostly) accessible to any lay person. Some of the charts were confusing to me, but I got the gist of things. The chapters are well organized, and his method of making the book a "geological mystery" is very well executed.I also appreciate the author's introspective style; he doesn't have all the answers, nor does he pretend to. Credit is given to fellow geologists for their field and lab work, and overall the reader gets a good sense of life (and death) on this planet 250 million years ago.If I were a paleontologist, no doubt this would be a 5 star read. As is, it's an excellent overview of a very intriguing period of time in our planet's history that anyone can enjoy, regardless of their level of knowledge for the subject at hand.I am keeping this book nearby as I plan to re-read it in the near future; I found it that engaging.

The Prince of Darkness: Radical Evil and the Power of Good in History, by Jeffrey Burton Russell

Review

"Fascinating. . . . A history of the Devil taken seriously, in theology, folklore, art, literature."―Village Voice"There is probably no one alive who knows more about the lore of the Devil than Jeffrey Burton Russell. . . . He supplies colourful accounts of the pictures medieval folklore formed of the Evil One, and discerning sketches of the insights of poets like Dante and Milton, and novelists from Dostoevsky to Flannery O'Conner. . . . A first-rate survey. . . . Close-packed as it inevitably is, it reads easily, and each of its chapters is full of accurate and skillfully arranged information."―Times Literary Supplement"Russell recreates the arcane images of good and evil we all once understood perfectly well as children. From the moment the cover is lifted on this beautifully produced book, the world darkens. Russell presents story after story, using them like a descending staircase, drawing us down into archetypal memories of unending battles with the Evil One."―Bloomsbury Review

I saw the author interviewed on the documentary "The Devil and Father Amorth" and am very glad I purchased this book. It did not disappoint. Informative and very thorough, it gave a great historical and theological overview of how the Devil has been thought of in history. I cannot help but think that the gaming of Satan during the 19th and 20th century proved to.be a horrendous error. The medieval.mind was probably more accurate .

A good read on the historical Satan. I think the cover and title is a bit misleading though. The author does a detailed work in capturing satan throughout history, so it is quite varied. A bit of a dry read for sure but if you dig through it you can find some gems.

I teach a course on the Faust tradition in western Europe which contains a lot of information about the representation of the Devil in literature and culture from the Middle Ages through the 20th c. Russell's works on the Devil have been invaluable to me, particularly his "Mephistopheles. The History of the Devil in the Modern World," of which "The Prince of Darkness" is in part a summary. I'd easily give 5 stars to "Mephistophles..." and it's too bad there is not a Kindle edition of it (I have the paperback edition and bought "Prince of Darkness" only because it seemed the closest Burton work to the one I wanted on Kindle). Not only is Burton a brilliant scholar with exhaustive knowledge of his subject, he is a very fine writer and parts of his book read almost like a novel. Bravo!

Hubby says that he f*$#@^g loves it, and that the writer is very pensive.

Great and interisting book for theology.

Russell is well informed, articulate and dare I say, aesthetic author. "The Prince of Darkness" which might be considered the hallmark of all Russell's work compiled, is immaculately researched and expertly woven. Unlike most non-fiction authors, Russell won't patronize you with watered-down asides or well-meaning bullet-points intended to assist you along the way. Instead, he engages you directly and persuasively with his fact-finding narrative and thought-provoking inquiry. Style aside, the content of "Prince" will have you spellbound from start to finish. It touches on the historical fictions surrounding Satan but doesn't settle for myths alone. Readers will be happy to know that Russell delves deeper into the philosophy and psychology surrounding the archetypes of the 'Dark Prince' the people who believe in them and on into the realms of ontological questions like good and evil. My only beef with the book -Russell himself- is that there is no conclusion to his research. It's well-written, fascinating but ultimately leaves you feeling teased rather than sated. Perhaps, like a true professor, he wants to deliver the facts and leave you to your own conclusions, but this proves frustrating. With so much knowledge and insight on a subject long stigmatized one would hope that Russell might have something to say about evil, human psychology or the archetype itself. In the end this is an informative read and a fun flip, but little else.

interisting!

This is a wonderfully literate and engaging survey of the history and literature surrounding Satan. The author, Jeffrey Burton Russell,Russell begins with a survey of the idea of evil and the earliest understanding of evil as a force or power that opposed its contradictory power of good. This binary division of good from evil provided a neat explanation of why there was evil in the world. Unfortunately, this explanation did not fit into the monotheistic position that there was one all-powerful God who was also all-good. Fitting evil, and its prototype, the Devil, into such a worldview is something that has engaged the western world for the last three millennia.Russell follows the trail of the Devil and evil from Mazdaism through Judaism and into Christianity. Russell's narrative is constantly interesting and informative. Russell provided the single best discussion of Origen's theology concerning universal redemption and the redemption of the demons that I have heard. Unlike some reviewer's I found that Russell was extremely even-handed when dealing with non-Christian belief systems.I particularly liked his development of the Devil in modernity. His discussion of Milton, Goethe and Flannery O'Connor were sufficiently captivating that I intend to listen to Milton's Paradise Lost on the grounds that it is a foundational piece of the Western literary tradition that I have overlooked. This is a good survey that provides some depth. As a survey, it covers a lot of territory in a quick and fascinating way.

I ordered these labels together with Wings of the World labels (from the same company) to decorate a gift box (made from a copier paper box from work) that was made to look like one of those old timey steamer trunks. The real gift was a cruise but there were no tickets or anything to give. So instead, the gift was presented as a steamer trunk filled with cruise related items (random Royal Caribbean stuff bought from ebay). These stickers were the critical finishing touch. They adhered nicely to the box (which was wrapped in paper) and were very cool and retro looking. Not sure how well they would stick to a real steamer trunk or suitcase though. There was a decent variety of style in each sticker package and they were just the right size. They were precisely what I needed and worked perfectly. I liked the Golden Age of Transport pack better because it had a greater variety and included not only air travel stickers but train and boat as well. The Wings of the World only had air travel stickers. I'm not sure if they offer some sort of variety pack that includes air, boat and train travel as well as exotic locations and hotels in one pack. I would definitely buy these again. It might have been nice if these were pre-aged but that can probably be accomplished with some light sanding or something. I'll try to include some pics of the fake steamer trunk with the stickers.

I wanted to write this because it would have been helpful to me. I expected the stickers to look aged, and only one did. The others looked brand spanking new including the white border round each of them, which I cut off. Also, they were just all the same sized rectangle or oval, or circle, which put me off as you could not put two of the same shape near another. If you look at the way they are displayed on the "suitcase" they vary in size, not true. They are bright and interesting but a little effort could have made them so much more suitable to be used in a group to portray real luggage labels instead of looking like new stickers. I did find if you cut and shaped them, it would help and I plan on brushing some stain on them. They came in a cute box, but that was not helpful.

I bought this set of luggage labels to decorate an old trunk (footlocker) for a travel themed room and I was very pleased with my purchase. These stickers are exactly what I was looking for. Before buying these stickers, I compared several different sticker collections and different manufacturers. I'm glad that I chose these stickers. They worked great for my project. They are a nice collection of truly exotic destinations. I paired this collection with the "Exotic Destinations Luggage Labels" from the same company to cover the entire trunk and to give it the look for a well-traveled old trunk. Both collections are die-cut and "peel and stick" decals and each sticker is approximately 4x6 inches (a nice size). I found them to adhere very well to the trunk. They are a bit shiny and do not look as vintage as I had hoped for but they still worked just fine for me (probably could easily be aged if desired). Overall, this is a very nice product and I wouldn't hesitate to buy these stickers again.

Perfect for my footlocker repurpose project. Covered the stickers with oak colored polyurethane for a more vintage look.

I love anything vintage, like these luggage labels. There are many creative uses for them. I've used them for scrapbooking, decorating old trunks/suitcases, and throwing together some cool collages with an antique/rustic theme. Whatever your project might be, you're bound to have a good time putting it together, and letting the memorabilia take you back to a simpler time!

I'm using these to decorate some old luggage I found. I plan on displaying the well worn luggage in my home as a decorative item. These give the luggage an aged look. I found scruffing some with very fine grit sandpaper gave some a more vintage appearance. Perfect for scrapbooking or wrapping gifts.

These are great but I disliked all of the white used on them. It makes them look less authentic. I cut the white outlines off & aged them with a fine steel wool rub...

These are really neat! Interesting graphics. Put them on an old trunk in our living room. They are the size of an index card.

This book has information about the history of the time of harvest from different cultures around the world and it also includes some activities you can do with your child. Overall it's a good book, however, the depiction of the first American Thanksgiving wasn't historically accurate. It depicts it on friendly terms....I sort of wished they hadn't even touched on the subject actually. But overall, if you skip over the Thanksgiving pages, I think it's good.

This is not a read all at once book. It is best to do a little bit at a time, discuss, do hands on activities, etc. then come back the next day and do the next section. In fact, this would make a great week-long unit. Book covers an equinox, how its related to harvest time, the history of harvesting, various harvest celebrations around the world, and some hands on things to do like making equinox muffins/cupcakes or using a flashlight on a globe to see how light changes due to the tilt of the earth. Overall. its a nice book with lots of great facts and its better than anything else I have seen on the market regarding this topic (fall equinox). THere is a list of other cultural celebrations to research as well which might be a fun group project.Cautions: For parents, please consider the following context before buying the book. Many of the cultural harvest celebrations include offerings to moon gods, sun gods, rain gods, ancestors, etc. No worship of the Biblical god was mentioned for the pilgrim's story even though faith played a key role. The Biblical God was mentioned in the Jewish festival.

My children love books about fall, as well as non-fiction books, but this did not hold their interest very well. I thought the illustrations were well done, though. If you come from a Biblical world view, it might be helpful to know that this book dates events from an old Earth perspective, and introduces different cultures worshiping sun gods and rain gods.

I bought this for my five year old, when he had some questions about the equinox. We found it overly wordy, presenting too much information, and fairly dull. We got through about half before I asked him if he was bored, and I was relieved when he said yes, because I was bored too!

A kids' text, no matter how nice and photogenic, has a a linear feel to it.The first impression I had after several readings of this book was that itflowed from the storybook like descriptions of the festivals, but did nothalt suddenly for the science explanations. I think to gather kids who likeone but not the other (storybooks or science) this is a good crossover book.As a reader I liked the nostalgic illustrations. As a person who teaches andtutors second language learners, I liked the compreshensible text with vocabulary not too difficult and not overly simplified for the ESL,ELL andEFL 'world'. I especially liked the easy to understand instructions forexperiments and the recipe.Homeschoolers and tutors should find the in-book lesson plan ideas andfestival follow ups very clear and inviting to use the book as a teachingtool. As a long time resident of Japan, I had an instant memory clip of thefascination I had for moon viewing. The very early royals built moonviewing rooms in their palaces and even today their are moon viewingexcursions for the sentimal. In that ever festivaling country, thelantern and moonviewing celebrations are of the most evocative. For children rasised in the city, this is a good introduction to how foodis harvested and celebrated around the world. For parents interested in interesting ways to present diversity, it isdeligtful. I would recommend it without hesitation.

A wonderful celebration of Fall. From the natural phenomenon to cultural celebrations around the world, this book (and the other in the series) are a great way to explain the changing of the seasons.

Great book - beautiful pictures. Also explains the seasons, has related craft and simple science activities at the end. Enjoyed by a 3 & 8 year old.

love the book!
